Beam Me Up

By JILL SCHUCK

How lasers work: In dermatology-speak, the word "laser" is a catchall for devises that use intense beams of focused bright light, those that use intense pulsed light (producing short, quick flashes) and ones that employ radio frequency or electromagnetic energy. To diminish wrinkles, some types of lasers, like Titan and Thermage, send energy deep into the dermis (the lower layers of skin) without damaging the epidermis (the upper layer). That energy creates heat and a slight injury, which sends the body into repair mode, encouraging existing collagen (a building block of skin) to contract and become tighter, and stimulating new collagen and elastin (another building block) to be produced. The result? Smoother, plumper, more youthful-looking skin. Other lasers, like Lyra, Affirm and V-Beam, have specific wavelengths that are attracted only to certain pigments, such as red or brown, and destroy anything within that color range, so they work well on blood vessels, spider veins, sunspots and hair. What a laser procedure is like: Most involve an application of topical anesthesia or a cooling gel, followed by a few passes of the device over the area to be treated. Patients usually experience slight warmth or a mild burning sensation, which dissipates quickly. Aftereffects can be similar to sunburn -- including some redness, swelling or flaking for up to a few days. How to find the right person to perform the procedure: Since you do not need a license to operate a laser, it's best to look for a board-certified dermatologist (check the American Academy of Dermatology Web site at www.aad.org) who has lasers as a major part of his or her practice. Be sure to do your research: in the wrong hands, you could be burned or scarred. Adds Dennis Gross, M.D., a dermatologist and dermatological surgeon in New York, "A word-of-mouth recommendation never hurts." How to take care of post-laser skin: Use gentle products, don't scrub and slather on a nonirritating sunscreen -- like one with zinc oxide -- on a daily basis. Cost: It depends on the doctor, the size of the area to be treated and the strength of the laser.

American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Releases New Consumer Attitudes Study

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery today releases its 10th Consumer Attitudes Study. The study has been taking the nation's pulse for the past decade, charting the American public's general feelings toward cosmetic surgery in a variety of areas. Following a 10-year trend of increasingly positive results, the study's 2007 edition finds the nation's approval of cosmetic surgery to be
at an all-time high.

According to the February 2007 report of 1000 Americans aged 18 and above, 62% of respondents are in favor of cosmetic surgery. This marks an 8% increase from 2006, and narrowly edges out the 61.8% approval rate in 2001, making it the highest reported approval rating since the survey was implemented. Other key findings of the study include:

* At 61% and 63%, respectively, men and women are almost as likely to approve of cosmetic surgery, while females are 16% more likely to consider plastic surgery than men.

* Senior citizens age 65 and above are 11% more likely to approve of cosmetic surgery now than they were in 2006.

* Americans between the ages of 18-24 are more likely to approve cosmetic surgery than those in any other age group.
The study was commissioned by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) and conducted by the independent research firm
Synovate.

According to 2006 ASAPS Cosmetic Surgery Statistics, last year women had over 10 million surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures (92 percent of total), and men had nearly 1 million procedures (8 percent of total). Overall, there was a 1 percent increase in the total number of cosmetic procedures performed.

A Unique Investment

by Cheryl Whitman and Mac Fadra, MBA, MPH

In the near future, the surgical and nonsurgical aesthetic medical services and products industry around the world could exceed $70 billion in sales. Traditionally, a physician enters the beauty business by adding aesthetic services to his or her practice or by opening a stand-alone medical spa or aesthetic practice. However, other unique business models are emerging.

One such model is the newly dubbed cosmetic medical center, which is essentially an attractive, contemporary stand-alone building that houses a broad spectrum of independently owned elective medical providers and entities under one roof. They are separated through condominium or office units, or they may share space in certain units.

The benefits to a physician or tenant are multifold. Cross-referrals, synergies, surgical suites, cross-marketing, sharing resources and staff, attractive real estate, and visibility are just some of them.

Physicians and tenant entities can retain their identities while operating under the umbrella of a large facility that could have the blessing or affiliation of a reputable, local academic medical center or hospital. Furthermore, physicians or tenant entities can either rent space or possibly buy a condo unit in such a facility. This way, the physician or tenant has the potential for capital appreciation from real estate as well as business ownership.

Dentistry Reinvented with Dental Spa Services

It's a new year and a new take on dentistry. No longer do patients complain about going to the dentist's office, but instead, they look forward with anticipation to their visit.

Why the change? The entrance of a new business model for dentists -The Dental Spa.

The Dental Spa concept, born from the surge and boom in cosmetic dentistry and the growth of the Medical Spa industry, is experiencing its adolescence because of an onslaught of procedures and services now performed by cosmetic enhancement trained dentists.

Propelled by growing patient demand, dentists are eagerly embracing this new and upbeat way to increase their practice revenue, while creating a more comprehensive ability to meet and exceed patient expectations. Although it may sound like a quagmire, it really is a new trend sweeping the country. More and more dentists, particularly those who perform cosmetic dental procedures, are adding medical spa procedures and services to their practices to create a "Dental Spa" environment for their patients. Moreover, they are able to do so by using much of the equipment that is already right there in their office, in fact, using the existing equipment to create a more robust revenue stream.

According to Spa Finder, "Dental spas often feature spa-inspired twists on traditional dental equipment, such as massage-capable dental chairs and new, less painful ways of delivering anesthesia." In addition, many dental spas offer patient-friendly options to reduce patient stress--like a selection of soothing music, portable DVD players, and satellite equipped televisions.

Dr. Thomas Adams, from Spa 32 explains, "While it may seem unusual for someone to visit a dental office for laser hair removal, laser wrinkle removal, laser skin rejuvenation or facial procedures such as Botox®, Restylane®, these additional aesthetic enhancement procedures fit nicely into the portfolio of a dental spa."

CEO Cheryl Whitman, of Beautiful Forever, a leading medical spa business consulting firm, recently launched a Dental Spa Success System (www.dentalspasuccess.com) that piggybacks on its hugely successful Medical Spa Success System (MSSS). The MSSS is a proven do-it-yourself, systematic educational tool for physicians, entrepreneurs, hospitals, and other entities interested in opening or expanding their existing medical spa.

The Dental Spa Success System is targeted specifically to dental professionals who wish to add medical spa procedures and services to their practices.

Dentists who wish to add medical spa procedures and services to their practices or dental spas need to be cognizant of state laws that may require physicians to either perform or supervise such procedures.  Such requirements vary by state.

In the event that state law prohibits a dentist from performing or offering such services, a physician would need to be contracted with in order to supervise such services and procedures.  Such arrangements are common as long as they are legally compliant and the physician truly supervises and oversees care.
