News From the ASPS:
11 Million Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Procedures in 2006 -- Up 7 percent

by Dr. E Wilkins

Reconstructive Plastic Surgery at 5.2 Million Procedures

May 15, 2007 -- Nearly 11 million cosmetic plastic surgery procedures were performed in the United States in 2006, up 7 percent from 2005, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). In addition, more than 5.2 million reconstructive plastic surgery procedures were performed last year.

"Cosmetic plastic surgery is a good barometer of the local and national economy," said ASPS President Roxanne Guy, M.D. "The increase in cosmetic plastic surgery procedures mirrors the strong economy, low unemployment levels, and high consumer confidence of 2006."

Surgical cosmetic procedures increased 2 percent, with more than 1.8 million procedures performed in 2006. The top five surgical procedures were breast augmentation (329,000), nose reshaping (307,000), liposuction (303,000), eyelid surgery (233,000), and tummy tuck (146,000). For the first time, breast augmentation is the most popular surgical procedure since the ASPS began collecting statistics in 1992.

Laser Industry Gains Even Amid Stumbles By Key Companies

BY STEVE WATKINS

FOR INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY

Cosmetic lasers are all the rage. You can get your wrinkles removed, lose unwanted hair and tighten up tissue, all with little to no cutting into your body.

But some high-profile cosmetic laser firms have had a few ugly blemishes lately. Cutera (CUTR) said last month that its first-quarter results would fall well short of estimates. Its stock plunged 31% that day. Candela (CLZR) also missed the mark with its first-quarter numbers.

It's not as though Americans are suddenly losing their vanity. On the contrary, the industry is still going strong, with sales growth ranging from 18% to 25% a year.

So why the sudden missteps by a couple of the group's larger players?

"I don't know that we have the answer to that right now," said Thom Gunderson, analyst at Piper Jaffray. "One quarter is not going to indicate a trend, one way or the other."

He points to the vast legions of aging baby boomers who battle the scars of time by having their wrinkles removed and their skin tightened. Those procedures are growing at 30% a year, according to one estimate.

"There are not too many boomers who wouldn't like to look younger if it's a noninvasive procedure at a reasonable cost," Gunderson said.

Company executives agree.

"Consumer interest is the most significant growth driver, (and) patients are asking their doctors for these procedures," Cutera Chief Executive Kevin Connors said in an interview earlier this year.

When Cutera pre-announced it would miss profit goals, Connors said it was a product of weak results from its expanded sales staff.

Bay Area Doctor Offers Vaginal Shot To Enlarge G-Spot

Women are driving miles to Dr. Justin Salerno's office in Vacaville to receive a shot of collagen that patients say helps them reach climax faster.

"It's a form of human collagen we inject into the vaginal tissues where the G-spot is," Salerno said.

Salerno is one of the only doctors in the nation offering the procedure, known as the G-Shot.

According to thegshot.com, the G-SHOT is a simple, nonsurgical, physician-administered treatment that can temporarily augment the Grafenburg spot in sexually active women with normal sexual function.Melissa Sherrill said she decided to get the G-Shot to increase her sexual pleasure."It didn't hurt at all," Sherrill said.

Salerno said he uses local anesthesia before injecting the FDA-approved collagen.

According to thegshot.com, the actual injection usually takes less than eight seconds and the total office visit time is usually less than 30 minutes.

"I've only offered this eight weeks, but I've been unable to keep up with demand," Salerno said. The G-Shot costs $1,850 and lasts four months, Favro reported.Salerno said the shot is designed for women who already have a healthy sex life and want an even better one.

"Way more quickly, and multiple, not just one or two, but four or five, which made it a lot better," said a patient who did not want to be identified.

Psychologist and sex therapist Dr. Bryna Barsky-Ex of Kaiser Permanente Santa Teresa does not recommend the G-Shot.

"I think getting addicted to the $1,800 every four months just to be able to function sexually is problematic. There are a lot of ways to get pleasure. Women really don't need a shot to be able to do it," Barsky-Ex said.

Barsky-Ex said she's concerned about the lack of studies looking at the possible long-term side effects of the injection.

"Once you've had it this good, you don't want to go back," said one patient.Sherrill said she is looking forward to the same results.

"Better sex, better sex life with my partner. The main thing is it gives me a boost of self esteem," Sherrill said.

According to thegshot.com, results may vary. The site lists 68 risks that are associated with the procedure, ranging from bleeding to nodule formation.

Dartmouth study suggests tea-drinking can lower risk of developing skin cancer

Hanover, N.H. -- Results of a Dartmouth Medical School study suggest that drinking two cups of tea daily can lower the risk of developing skin cancer, BBC News reports.

The study, published in a recent issue of the European Journal of Cancer Prevention, compared the tea-drinking habits of 1,400 skin cancer patients with the habits of 700 patients who had not developed the disease. Researchers asked the subjects about diet, lifestyle and their consumption of green and black teas, both of which are rich in antioxidants that have been shown to prevent the development of cancer cells in animals.

The collected data revealed that subjects who drank two or more cups a day had a 65 percent lower risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma. Tea-drinking also appeared to protect against basal cell carcinoma, but to a lesser degree.

The researchers write that further research into the protective effects of tea could lead to a better understanding of how cancer develops.
