Landmark Discovery in Manipulating Fat Could Revolutionize Plastic Surgery, ASPS Says

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - This week, physicians and researchers at Georgetown University Medical Center revealed they may have discovered a natural way to fill-in pesky crow's feet and get rid of unwanted fat in the thigh and abdominal areas. According to a study published online in the July 1 issue of Nature Medicine, physicians have been able to selectively add fat in targeted areas of the body in laboratory animals by injecting a natural chemical (neuropeptide Y) found in the body. Likewise, they have found blocking this chemical (neuropeptide Y2R blocker) can prevent the development of fat.

The study, partially funded by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) National Endowment for Plastic Surgery, could revolutionize aspects of cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery, says the ASPS.

"This is the first well-described mechanism found that can effectively eliminate fat, rejuvenate the face, or re-contour the body without surgery," said Stephen Baker, MD, DDS, ASPS Member Surgeon and study co-author. "Unlike current methods, this natural chemical could prove to induce a person's own body to remove or add fat. We are very excited about the animal findings; however, we know more research is needed and predict that studies in humans may not begin for another two years."

Patients could say goodbye to saddle bags and have results similar to liposuction, the third most popular surgical cosmetic procedures, by using the natural chemical to block the pathways that make cells create fat. In fact, this discovery could deliver the unproven promises of mesotherapy and LipoDissolve, which are touted to non-surgically remove localized fat.

Patients tired of staring at marionette lines or deflated lips could also see significant benefits. This natural chemical could be used to induce cells into making fat in a specific area. The patient's own body would naturally fill in wrinkles or augment lips without the high re-absorption rate found with current fat injection techniques.

"Through injections of the natural chemical, reconstructive plastic surgery patients may be able to produce their own fat in a targeted site, helping to fill in areas for breast and facial reconstruction that have been affected by disease or trauma," said Dr. Baker. "This discovery could be a future option for the more than 56,000 patients who had breast reconstruction in 2006.

Male Makeovers

It's no surprise that men in the entertainment industry have long used cosmetic procedures to keep them looking young and fresh. But doctors say now, regular men, both macho and metro sexual, are following in their footsteps.

Gary Uncle isn't a metro sexual or a gym rat. He's just a normal guy and dad to a brand new baby "trying to make myself look a little younger.  I've got a young wife, and nothing wrong with trying to better your appearance."

Last year he had his first cosmetic procedure -- thermage.

Gary says "that was to tighten up skin area around here."

Now he's back for botox to get rid of frown lines between his eyes...and is injected with restylane to fill in the hollow areas.

Gary is part of a growing trend -- doctor dale Isaacson has seen about a 20-percent increase in men's cosmetic procedures over the last five years.

"The baby boomer population is aging. Second, I think the stigma for having cosmetic procedures is eroding" says Doctor Dale Isaacson.

Doctors say most often -- men want to reduce wrinkles and lines around their mouth, get rid of crows feet and eliminate dark, hollow areas under the eyes.

These procedures often require higher doses than they do for women and have to be administered differently because mens' skin is thicker and their faces are shaped differently.

Doctor Isaacson says "men have stronger muscles, and it takes more botox to relax those muscles then it does with women."

Gary leaves with a slightly red forehead, but the hollow circles under his eyes are already disappearing and he considers that a good investment.

He says "if you don't spend your money on your appearance, you're going to spend it on the golf course or something else ... fishing and this lasts longer."

That makes this dad feel better and younger too.

Doctors say another reason men are having more cosmetic procedures is because a lot of treatments are quick and can be done on a lunch hour, rather than requiring surgery or going under the knife.

Deer's Blood a Spa Treatment in Siberian Russia

This patch of Siberia nestled just above the Kazakh steppe beckons tourists with awe-inspiring nature. The Katun River's rapids are world-class. More than 7,000 lakes adorn meadowy hillocks and vast stands of white birch. Above it all tower the majestic, snow-capped peaks of the Altai range.

For Russia's nouveau riche, however, it's the blood of another natural beauty of the Altai -- the maral deer -- that lures them here.

Every summer, farmworkers saw off the antlers of thousands of maral deer a few months before they naturally shed, boil the antlers in vats and use the murky soup to produce baths and steam treatments treasured by many Russians as a cure for everything from arthritis to impotence.

For an extra jolt of health, devotees swig shots of maral deer blood sweetened with fruit syrup. Like college kids at the campus liquor store, they leave Altai spas with boxes of bottled deer blood to ensure breakfasts at home don't go by without a spoonful.

"I drink the blood of maral every day in the morning for a month," said Sergei Trubchaninov, 46, a supermarket supplies executive. Red-faced as he bastes in a barrel-shaped personal sauna that infuses his skin with vaporized maral blood, Trubchaninov describes his wake-up cocktail: "Thirty grams worth, 50 percent blood, 50 percent vodka."

The spa trade is big business in Russia. Moscow's moneyed elite regularly flock to downtown spas with Botox, body wraps and cosmetic stem cell treatments on their price lists. The blood of the maral deer, however, has a cachet all its own.

Russians believe a substance called pantogematogen found in the bloody ooze from the antlers has unique curative properties that work on a cellular level. Every year, they show up at Altai resorts hoping the blood baths, steam treatments and maral blood-infused massages will fend off a laundry list of afflictions. Middle-age Russian men look to pantogematogen for a chance at Viagra-like virility.

Russian health researchers say their studies support those beliefs. Scientists at the Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences say years of research and clinical trials have convinced them that pantogematogen can be used to treat a range of maladies, including cardiovascular disease, arthritis, ulcers, impotence and infertility.
